La Cala de Mijas, the place to be - Golf beach and sun
Situated on the coast within the municipality of Mijas and province of Malaga, the village was originally know as "La Cala del Moral" (the Bay of Mulberries) due to the mulberry trees growing in the area. The name was changed in the 1970s to La Cala de Mijas and is more commonly known just as “La Cala” to locals and tourists alike.
La Cala has changed from a small, typically Andalusian white-washed fishing village of the 1950s and 1960s to a busy little resort town over the past 20-30 years. In the earlier days, La Cala boasted some 30 fishermen's cottages, a couple of bars, an open-air summer cinema, a butcher, a grocer, a small chapel, a school and little else.
The specific location of La Cala is perfect for warm sunny summers and mild short winters. This is due to its proximity to the sea and having the backdrop and shelter of the Sierra de Mijas mountains. Enjoying around 300 days of sunshine a year, less than 600mm of rain and temperatures rarely falling below 18º, it is clearly understandable why La Cala is both a popular tourist destination and place to live.
Today La Cala is a vibrant and busy town yet it has managed to maintain much of its original charm and character remaining unspoiled by mass tourism. It is well serviced with shops, supermarkets, banks, restaurants, bars, hotels, cultural centre, town hall, schools and transport links. Malaga airport is only 25 minutes away and the busy resorts of Fuengirola and Marbella are only a short bus ride or 10 minutes away if travelling by car.
One of the major attractions of the Mijas area is undoubtedly Golf. With an ideal climate for year round playing and no less than 12 courses in what has become known locally as the “Mijas Golf Valley”, golfers really are spoiled for choice. La Cala is located conveniently for access to all of the courses, some of which are considered to be up there with the top courses across Europe.
The town continues to develop with future plans for a train link that would go directly to Fuengirola, Malaga Airport and Malaga itself making the town even more accessible. There are also a new health centre and a public sports centre with further plans for a police station. One of the most exciting recent developments for La Cala has been the beachfront boardwalk which connects La Cala with Cabopino – a stretch of the coastline of over 6km. Currently enjoyed by thousands of visitors and residents alike, who can take a run, brisk walk or leisurely stroll along the wonderful beach front and partake in a drink, bite to eat or simply a seat in the sun at one of the many “chiringuitos” (beach bars) along the way. Plans are now underway to extend the boardwalk in the opposite direction from La Cala to Fuengirola to eventually cover the whole of the Mijas Costa 14km coastline.
